Modern Art Museum

At the end of the 19th century, a landmark appeared in Amsterdam, telling details about the history and inhabitants of the city. Initially, old household items from the homes of local residents were stored here, but in the middle of the century many exhibits dispersed to other museums. Around the same time, several collections of paintings by French and Dutch artists, sculptors, and designers arrived at the Stedeleikmuseum. In the mid-1970s, household items left the walls of the museum, and it became the first place to bring together so many exhibits of modern art.

Interesting to know! The Van Gogh Museum is part of the Stedeleikmuseum, since from 1930 to 1972 most of its exhibits were stored there.

Today the Amsterdam Museum of Modern Art presents the largest collection of works by Malevich, many works of Monet, Picasso, Cezanne, Chagall and Rietveld.

Museum of germs

Opened in 2014, Micropia is still the only museum in the world with microbes instead of ordinary exhibits and glass flasks instead of picture frames.

Micropia is one of Amsterdam's best museums to visit with children. Of course, you won’t be able to touch the microbes, but you are always welcome to see them through a microscope. This place is not like an ordinary scientific laboratory. Here you will learn in a fascinating way about many things that you encounter in everyday life: what happens to spoiled foods (where else you will see a hamburger a year ago), who lives in your toothbrush, how the cold virus spreads and what interesting happens in an ordinary jar preserves.

Can you do it? So that tourists had the motivation to go around the entire museum and not miss anything, the museum staff launched a kind of competition. At the entrance, each visitor receives a card on which to collect 30 fingerprints of microbes located in different parts of the museum.

Useful and interesting facts:

  4. If you are going to visit not only the museum, but the zoo itself, buy a comprehensive ticket on the Micropia website - this saves you 6 euros.

Church of the beloved of our Lord in the attic

There are people who never give up, and Ian Hartman is one of them. In 1661, this Dutchman, without knowing it, founded one of Amsterdam's most mysterious museums in order to be able to practice his religion, despite state prohibitions.

Every Sunday, for 450 years, masses are held in an underground church located in the attic of a residential building. More than 100,000 tourists annually visit the monastery of the brave merchant and admire his work.
